RV replacement mattresses are usually made of some type of memory foam rather than the innerspring design used in traditional mattresses. These new memory foam mattresses are nothing like the old style of memory foam that was often too hot and uncomfortable. These new foam mattresses come with multiple layers, including a “cooling” layer that helps keep the bed from getting too hot. The multiple layers provide a more comfortable sleep experience than can be achieved using just springs. Newer memory foam mattresses also come in a range of firmness levels, usually determined by the thickness of the mattress. Most sleepers looking for a mattress that will support back, side, and stomach sleeping will want something in the 8 to 12 inch range.
Many RVs, campers, travel trailers, and fifth wheels come with a special mattress size known as the Short/RV Queen. The RV Queen is five inches shorter than a Standard Queen, measuring 60 inches wide by 75 inches long. In contrast, a Standard Queen is 80 inches long.
Our fifth wheel originally came with a Standard Queen “Denver” mattress that we used for about 18 months before it became too uncomfortable to continue sleeping on. When we bought a new mattress, we opted for the shorter RV Queen, which gave us a little more space to walk around the end of the bed.
We got an Arctic Dreams 10″ Cooling Gel Mattress and highly recommend it. We’ve been using it for over six months and absolutely love it. Read our full review on it here.
If you need a Short/RV Queen mattress, the comparison chart below shows the most popular and highly rated brands offering this mattress size. Of course, these brands also offer the standard mattress sizes as well, including Full, Standard Queen, King, and California King. We love the Arctic Dreams, but all four of these brands have great reviews.

Best mattresses in standard sizes
There are two other popular online mattress brands, but they do not offer a Short/RV Queen. If you are lucky enough to need a Standard Queen, King, Full, or other common mattress size, we recommend trying either of these two brands. They are both highly rated and both come with the best trial period in the industry: 100 Nights with Free Returns.
There’s no risk. If you don’t like the mattress, you can get a full refund any time before 100 nights is up.
What about returns on other mattresses?
For mattresses purchased on Amazon, customers have been reporting hassle-free returns of these memory foam type mattresses as long as it is within Amazon’s standard 30-day return period. However, some mattresses may allow a longer return period.
One popular mattress manufacturer states the following about making returns on mattresses purchased through Amazon:
We recommend chatting with Amazon Customer Support directly for return options. Alternatively, you can contact Amazon Large Item Pickups toll-free at 866-423-5353 to make arrangements.
It’s probably a good idea to contact the Large Item Pickups department to avoid any hiccups in the process.
